Crypto casinos in Australia: what the law says

No online casino is licensed to operate in Australia. Every crypto casino that accepts Australians does so from offshore, outside local protections.

What the law says

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it illegal to provide or advertise online casino games such as slots, roulette and blackjack to people in Australia. The offence sits with the operator, not the player. Licensed Australian companies can offer online sports and race betting, and nothing else.

Who enforces it

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) investigates illegal services and asks internet providers to block them. Blocked casinos often reappear at a new address, which is why offshore sites change domains so frequently.

Where crypto fits

Since 11 June 2024, licensed online wagering services in Australia may not accept credit cards or digital currency. So a site taking crypto from Australians is not locally licensed, whatever badge it shows.

What that means for you

Playing at an offshore crypto casino is not an offence for the player, but you have no Australian regulator to complain to if a withdrawal is refused, a bonus is voided or the site disappears. BetStop, the national self exclusion register, only covers licensed Australian wagering services, so it will not block an offshore casino.
