Provably fair explained: how to check a crypto casino result yourself

Provably fair is the one genuinely new thing crypto casinos brought to gambling. It lets you check, after the fact, that a result was not changed once you had bet.

The problem it solves

At a normal online casino you trust that the random number generator is honest because a licence and a test lab say so. Provably fair replaces part of that trust with arithmetic you can run yourself.

The three ingredients

Server seed. A long random string the casino generates. Before you bet, the casino shows you its hash, a fingerprint that cannot be reversed. The casino is now committed to that seed. It cannot swap it later without the fingerprint changing.

Client seed. A string that comes from your side. The casino suggests one, but you can change it to anything. Because the casino committed to its seed before knowing yours, it cannot pick a server seed that beats you.

Nonce. A counter that goes up by one with every bet, so each bet gets a different result from the same pair of seeds.

How a result is made

The game combines the server seed, the client seed and the nonce, runs them through a hash function (usually HMAC SHA 256), and turns the output into a dice roll, a crash point or a card order using a published formula.

How to verify a bet

  1. Before playing, note the hashed server seed shown in the fairness panel. Set your own client seed.
  2. Play.
  3. Rotate your seed pair in the fairness panel. The casino now reveals the old server seed unhashed.
  4. Hash the revealed seed with SHA 256. It must match the fingerprint you noted in step one.
  5. Feed the server seed, client seed and nonce into a verifier and compare the result with your bet history.

Most casinos offer a built in verifier. For a proper check, use an independent one or the open source script the game publishes, so you are not asking the casino to mark its own homework.

What it proves and what it does not

It proves the result was fixed by seeds chosen before your bet and was not altered afterwards.

It does not prove:

  • That the odds are good. The house edge sits in the payout table. A dice game that pays 1.98x on a 50 percent chance is fair and still takes 1 percent of every bet.
  • That the casino will pay you. Fair results and honoured withdrawals are separate questions.
  • Anything about third party slots or live tables. Those rely on studio certification, not seeds.

A quick honesty test for any casino

Look for a fairness page that explains the formula for each game, lets you set your own client seed, and reveals old server seeds when you rotate. If the site says “provably fair” and offers none of those, the phrase is decoration.

Quick answers

Does provably fair mean the casino has no house edge?

No. It proves the result was generated from seeds fixed before your bet. The house edge is built into the game's payout table and still applies to every bet.

Are all crypto casino games provably fair?

No. It usually covers the casino's in house games such as dice, crash, mines, plinko and limbo. Slots and live dealer games from outside studios rely on licensed random number generators and lab testing instead.

What happens if a result fails verification?

Recheck that you used the unhashed server seed for the right nonce range. If it still does not match, save the bet ID and seeds and raise it with support and the licensing body. A genuine mismatch is serious.
