Crypto casinos in Canada: what the law says

Canada has no single online casino law. Each province sets its own rules, and Ontario's licensed sites are barred from taking crypto.

How it works

Gambling in Canada is run by the provinces. Two have opened regulated markets for private operators. Ontario launched on 4 April 2022, with iGaming Ontario managing the market and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) regulating it. Alberta followed on 13 July 2026, regulated by the AGLC.

Other provinces offer online casino games through government run sites, such as PlayNow and Espacejeux.

Where crypto fits

Ontario’s standards for internet gaming are explicit: cryptocurrency is not legal tender and shall not be accepted. A casino taking crypto from an Ontario player is therefore not registered with the AGCO.

Offshore crypto casinos do accept Canadians. They sit outside the provincial systems, so the provincial regulator cannot help with a dispute.

What that means for you

If you want the protection of a regulator, play at a site registered in your province and expect to pay in dollars. If you play offshore with crypto, check the licence the site claims, test a small withdrawal early and assume you are on your own if something goes wrong.
