What the law says
Decree-Law 66/2015 created Portugal’s online gambling regime, in force since June 2015. The Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), part of Turismo de Portugal, licenses operators and publishes the list of legal sites.
Where crypto fits
The regime only admits payments in legal tender through supervised institutions, so SRIJ licensed casinos do not take crypto. A site that does is not on the SRIJ list.
What that means for you
SRIJ keeps a public list of licensed operators. Check it before you sign up anywhere. At a licensed site you get self exclusion tools, identity checked accounts and a regulator to complain to. At an offshore crypto casino you get none of those, and SRIJ can order the site blocked.
Getting help
SRIJ’s site explains self exclusion and lists support services for problem gambling in Portugal.
